Set vocal reverb and delay without losing clarity

Understand decay, pre-delay, and wet level, with a worked delay-time calculation at 120 BPM.

Reverb creates a sense of space; delay creates repeated, delayed sound. Both can enrich vocals and both can obscure words. Keep the original and start with small amounts in the full mix.

Separate three controls

Decay is tail length, pre-delay is the gap before reflections begin, and wet controls processed sound level. Changing long decay and high wet level together makes the cause of lost clarity harder to identify.

Adjustment order

  1. Bypass reverb and balance voice with backing.
  2. Add a short, quiet tail. Listen for overlap into the next words.
  3. Reduce wet level if the voice blurs. Try a little pre-delay to separate the direct sound from reflections.
  4. Check both the busiest lyric passage and the final sustained note.

A tempo calculation

At 120 BPM, a quarter note lasts 60,000 ÷ 120 = 500 ms. Eighth notes last 250 ms and dotted eighths 375 ms. These are delay starting points, not mandatory settings. Prioritize repeats that do not compete with the next lyric.

Leave room at the end

An export ending at the last note can truncate the tail. Include enough decay and check the ending in another player. Vocal processing settings are not automatically appropriate for the whole master mix.

Try the built-in Reverb

Select the vocal track in the DAW and add Reverb through DEVICES. The built-in effect exposes Room Size, Decay, Damping, Pre-Delay, and Mix. Its Decay value is a normalized 0–1 control, not a duration in seconds.

  1. Use the short vocal recording and listen with the effect bypassed first. See its provenance with the audio example.
  2. For an exercise, start with Room Size 0.3, Decay 0.25, Damping 0.5, Pre-Delay 20 ms, and Mix 0.1. These are starting settings for comparison, not measured results or universal vocal recommendations.
  3. Raise only Mix to 0.2 and compare intelligibility. Restore Mix, change only Decay, and listen for the difference in the tail.
  4. Match playback levels when comparing bypass and processed sound. Check the ending again after exporting WAV.

Other plugins can use different units or behavior for similarly named controls. Do not transfer these values to another reverb without checking its parameter units.
