What to check before using VST plugins with a browser DAW
Distinguish browser instruments from native VSTs, check the bridge connection, and verify recording and export.
VST plugins run in an operating-system plugin host. Dropping a native plugin file into a browser does not make every VST run directly. LA Studio's built-in browser instruments and its external native-plugin bridge are different execution paths.
Before connecting
- Check plugin OS and format compatibility with the host.
- Ensure the plugin and its license activation are available on that host.
- Start the required bridge or desktop app and verify the connection target.
A no-install browser workflow does not remove installation requirements for external native plugins.
Test a single sound
Before loading a complex project, test one instrument with a short MIDI note or one effect with a short audio file. A connected status alone is not enough: confirm that sound returns.
If no sound returns
Check plugin input/output, bypass, track mute, and bridge status in order. Latency may come from the audio round trip and host load as well as browser processing.
Save and export
Opening the project on another machine can require the same plugin and preset. Keep an audio render of important parts. Where offline export is unsupported, verify the available real-time recording path. For an entirely built-in instrument workflow, see the SoundFont guide.
